Congratulations to Professor Sally Lowell on becoming a member of EMBO. Sally Lowell EMBO membership honours distinguished scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the life sciences. Professor Lowell is one of 19 new members based in the UK. Professor Lowell set up her own research group at the University of Edinburgh in 2007, with the aim of understanding how pluripotent cells steer a path towards lineage commitment. She holds a prestigious Wellcome Trust Senior Fellowship. In 2022, Professor Lowell was awarded The Anne McLaren Award for Outstanding Women in Developmental Biology, by the International Society of Differentiation and in 2024 was awarded the Wolpert Medal by the British Society for Developmental Biology (BSDB) for her extraordinary contributions to the teaching and communication of Developmental Biology. Congratulations to Sally on her election to EMBO. This award recognises Sally’s many scientific contributions; most recently, her lab’s development of new tools that will deepen our understanding of how cell-cell interactions drive developmental progression. Professor Ian Chambers I’m absolutely delighted to become a member of EMBO and look forward to contributing to all the great work they do for the biology community. I’m grateful to all the colleagues, within and beyond Edinburgh, who have supported me over the years. Professor Sally Lowell EMBO is an international organisation of life scientists, which has more than 2,000 members, elected by peers. This year it is celebrating its 60th anniversary and there are 120 new additions to EMBO’s membership. EMBO's major goals are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a European research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. This year's EMBO Members’ Meeting will take place on 29 October – 1 November 2024 in Heidelberg, Germany. The meeting will introduce new members and associate members to the organisation and give them the opportunity to meet fellow EMBO members.
