10 December 2020 CRM scientists and professional services staff have helped to deliver in the delivery of online STEM Clubs for local school children. Six STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Clubs are currently being delivered to children from Castleview, Niddrie Mill, Prestonfield, Gilmerton, St John Vianney and Craigdour Park primary schools, in collaboration with Edinburgh BioQuarter and King’s Building Campus. Weekly sessions revolve around fun hands-on STEM activities, with materials provided beforehand, which all contribute to the children receiving a CREST Award at the end of term. This includes making toothpaste, building telescopes, growing cress and learning about contamination. Volunteers from Centre have delivered the clubs for Castleview, Niddrie Mill and Prestonfield schools, working with other colleagues from across the wider BioQuarter campus. Dr Cathy Southworth, Community Engagement Manager for Edinburgh BioQuarter, said: It is immensely satisfying for us at Edinburgh BioQuarter to feel that we can ensure our local young people still have an opportunity to learn and be curious about STEM when so much activity has ceased. The after school STEM clubs have seen our staff and students enjoy themselves by virtually connecting with our local primary school children in STEM action packed sessions.
